Every year on January 27, date of the gates of Auschwitz, Italy remembers the Holocaust (extermination of the Jewish people) , the racial laws, the persecution of Italian Jewish citizens, the Italians who suffered deportation, imprisonment, death, and those who, even in different fields and camps, have opposed the project of extermination, and the risk of their life they have saved more lives and protected the persecuted. This year the City ha aderito alla Giornata della Memoria. Stamane, in modo particolare, il Prefetto di Palermo dottor Giuseppe Caruso, ha consegnato al concittadino Antonino Ribaudo la medaglia d'onore conferitagli dal Presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano. Antonino Ribaudo, classe 1920, è deportato ed internato in un lager nazista in Jugoslavia.
“Senza capire le implicazioni sul presente - ha dichiarato il Sindaco Nino Iannazzo presente alla cerimonia – la storia non può essere maestra di vita. Mantenerne vivo il ricordo è un atto non solo doveroso ma anche necessario. Anche oggi bisogna stare attenti alla paura verso le culture diverse dalla nostra. La volontà della nostra cittadina è quella di contraddistinguersi per l’accoglienza, for solidarity, the willingness to integrate, in accordance with common rules and shared.
